Paraphimosis is a condition where a retracted foreskin cannot be pulled over the tip of the penis. This usually occurs when a tight foreskin gets forcibly rolled over the glans as in difficult penetration or prolonged intercourse. This results in swelling and edema which cuts off blood supply thereby contributing to edema resulting in a vicious cycle. Paraphimosis is a medical emergency. If untreated, this can cause serious damage to the penis by cutting off blood flow. In most cases at the Metro Male clinic, this is treated by gently reducing the paraphimosis using local anaesthetic jelly. Sometimes a small stab incision to release the fluid inside may be required and very rarely circumcision is advised.
