What is Phimosis?
Phimosis is the inability to retract the foreskin over the glans penis.
In children and in young adolescents this may be a normal phenomenon without cause for concern. However, in a select population of patients it may be bothersome. In children this may cause repeat ballooning of the glans and may lead to urinary tract infections. In adults especially in diabetics, infections may predispose to phimosis and may cause urinary tract obstructions with dribbling urine.
The treatment for phimosis in adults after all conservative treatment like steroid creams and manual stretching have been exhausted is surgery. Either a dorsal slit operation or a circumcision can be done. Cicumcision is a simple day care surgery which offers permanent relief for symptoms of phimosis. This is done regularly at the Metro Male clinic by a special technique. Recovery is quick with minimal pain.
