Tamsulosin is a medication prescribed to men with enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia – BPH). Complete name of the chemical compound is called Tamsulosin HCL or Tamsulosin Hydrochloride. Prostate is a small walnut sized gland that sits right below the bladder. The urethra from the bladder passes through the prostate. Prostate gland plays an important role in producing seminal fluids and controlling the out flow of urine. 

The exact reason why the prostate gets enlarged is not known. Tamsulosin doesn’t really help by shrinking the prostate to its normal size but it helps in relaxing the muscles around the prostate and the bladder. As a result, the symptoms of enlarged prostate (reduced flow of urine, frequent need to urinate etc) are relieved.

Tamsulosin hydrochloride uses

Tamsulosin belongs to a group of medicines called the ‘alpha blockers’. Tamsulosin mechanism of action – It works by relaxing the muscles around the bladder and the prostate gland. As the prostate controls the flow of urine, relaxing the muscles around it when it is enlarged helps in relieving the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Symptoms of BPH that are relieved by Tamsulosin are:

  1. Frequent need to urinate
  2. Nocturia – frequently urinating at night
  3. Difficulty in starting the urine out flow.
  4. Weak urine stream
  5. Dribbling of urine in the end.

Tamsulosin dosage

Tamsulosin in India is sold under different brand names such as Flowmax, Tamlocept 0.4mg, Contiflo 0.4mg, Tamsin 0.4mg, Urimax 0.4mg etc. Typical dosage of Tamsulosin is 0.4mg (in a capsule), once a day after meal, taken orally. Duration of the prescription is usually 4 weeks. By the time your prescription is over, you should feel better.

Tamsulosin side effects

The primary side effect of Tamsulosin is ‘reduced blood pressure’. If you are using medications for controlling your blood pressure, you should mention that to your doctor. Due to the reduced blood pressure, you may feel dizzy or in the worst case, you may faint. 

Dizziness, drowsiness, running nose and in some cases, problems with ejaculation are also noted side effects of using Tamsulosin. These should subside as your body gets used to the medicine. If you feel that the side effects of using Tamsulosin are a little overboard or unbearable, let your doctor know.

Very rarely, allergic reactions such as development of rashes, itching, swelling of face, tongue may be seen. See your doctor immediately if you develop such side effects.

What if you miss your dose of Tamsulosin?

Don’t make it a habit of missing your medicine. Missing the schedule once in a while is fine. Just take the medicine as soon as you remember unless it is too close to the next day’s dosage. Remember, your body needs time to flush out the medicine. Don’t overdose with multiple dosage in a day to substitute for the previous day’s missed dosage, it can lead to an emergency if your blood pressure drops to very low levels.
